A virologist at the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) recently discovered a virus, named hedgehog arterivirus, from fatal cases of encephalitis in hedgehogs. They plan to do further research on this arterivirus in hedgehogs, initially to explore how widespread the virus is. We are working with DEFRA providing samples, especially if hedgehogs in rehabilitation have died suddenly or had neurological symptoms. This research will provide greater insight as to how widespread the Novel Arterivirus Associated is and how fatal the outbreak is for Encephalitis in European Hedgehogs. This was initially discovered back in England 2019.
