Writer's picture: HWHSHWHS

The Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary recently hosted TUI employees for a meaningful day of volunteering. The sanctuary, a refuge for hedgehogs, relies heavily on volunteers to keep its facilities running smoothly and to care for its many residents. This event showcased the profound impact that corporate volunteering can have on local communities, especially in initiatives focused on animal rescue and rehabilitation. It was a day filled with hard work, team spirit, and the joy of helping a worthy cause.

Preparing the Sanctuary for Its Residents

Upon arrival, TUI volunteers met with the sanctuary’s staff, who explained the day's tasks. The team quickly organised into smaller groups, prepared to address a variety of essential jobs that would improve the living conditions for the hedgehogs.

One major task involved clearing hedgehog pens cluttered with branches and other debris. Not only did this ensure a clean and safe environment for the hedgehogs, but it also allowed caretakers better visibility and access to the pens—critical factors in maintaining the health and safety of the animals. With more than 50 hedgehogs residing at the sanctuary, proper upkeep is vital. Volunteers diligently cleared out every pen, demonstrating their commitment to ensuring a welcoming space for all residents.

Chicken Coops and Wood Store Organization

After the hedgehog pens were cleaned, TUI volunteers focused on the chicken coops. Cleaning two chicken coops required coordination and teamwork, as volunteers worked together to remove the old debris.

Once the coops were finished, the attention turned to improving the wood store. Volunteers organised stacks of wood and created space for new racks. This task not only maintained the sanctuary’s facilities but also ensured that necessary materials would be easily accessible for future projects, keeping the operations efficient.

Enhancing Paths and Planting a Birch Tree

Another key part of the volunteer day involved improving the paths around the Hog Hospital by laying fresh wood chips. This enhancement made navigation easier for staff and offers visitors a more pleasant experience. The volunteers approached this task with enthusiasm, laying down wood chips generously to ensure the paths were well-covered and safe.

A memorable highlight was the planting of a birch tree in the sanctuary. This act symbolises growth and renewal, aligning closely with the mission of the sanctuary. The birch tree not only beautifies the landscape but is also expected to provide essential habitat for local wildlife in the years to come.

The Impact of Community Service

This day of service at Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary was more than just completing tasks; it provided an opportunity for volunteers to connect with nature and understand the importance of wildlife conservation. Many TUI employees left with a sense of accomplishment, knowing their efforts helped make a positive difference in the lives of the hedgehogs.

A Heartfelt Thanks

As the day wrapped up, the TUI volunteers reflected on their time at Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary. The joy and pride on their faces showcased the significant impact that community service can have, not only on the sanctuary but also on those volunteering their time.

The sanctuary extended its heartfelt gratitude to the TUI team for their hard work and commitment. Initiatives like this are vital for local organisations striving to protect wildlife and educate the public. The sense of community and shared responsibility for the environment created during this day will resonate long after the tools are packed away.

Moving forward, both TUI and Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary look to continue their partnership, inspiring even more community members to engage in wildlife preservation efforts.
