A Family Run Registered Charity with 100% of Donations Going to Help the Hedgehogs.
British Wild Hedgehogs are on the red list of endangered species with 70% of their population decreased over the past decade in rural areas and a 50% from towns and cities.
We are a small family run Registered Charity that helps rehabilitate wild hedgehogs. You can support us with donations, gifts, fundraising, sponsorship, partnerships, or legacies. We would appreciate your support even if it is helping to raise awareness and telling others about us and letting them know what we do to help the hedgehogs.
Please Support Us
One-off monetary donations or regular monetary donations can be made via the Charities Aid Foundation or via PayPal Giving Fund. So, whether you have raised money or are able to donate, we are appreciative of any amount you can spare.
Donations of items
There are many items we are always in need of such as cat (not fish) or dog jelly-based food, clean towels, small plastic (not fabric) animal carriers, black or clear large bin refuse bags, or large plastic tubs with lockable lids.
We currently have a peak of around 80 hedgehogs at any one time and an average of between 30-90 in rehabilitation.
Hedgehogs in rehabilitation are with us anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months but normally at least 1-2 months. One hedgehog can easily eat close to an entire can of dog food, but it is normally just over half a can or a large bowl of hedgehog food. It is not unusual to go through at least 30-40 cans of food a day. This does not include the more expensive foods such as the critical care mousse and hoglet powdered food.
Donations are greatly appreciated and help us a huge amount. There are a lot of ongoing costs involved in rescuing the hedgehogs, but it costs over £200 a month just to feed and shelter a hedgehog in rehabilitation, in an incubator.
Some of the larger costs for the Charity are insurance and electricity along with the on-going running costs of the rescue vehicle used to pick up and drop off hedgehogs on rescue and once released back in to the wild. The cost of fuel is more than £50 a week. These costs alone amount to several thousand pounds a year. There are also hedgehog consumable costs (such as medical treatments, gloves, various disinfectants, wound sprays, flea, mite, and tick sprays, Milton tablets, etc..) and general maintenance and repairs to hedgehog buildings, hutches, and pens. On top of this are expensive items such as incubators.
Fundraisers
Fundraisers come in many forms. Groups of adults and children may fundraise at their school, Brownies, Rainbows or Scouts groups. Individuals or friends may hold fundraising events such as Bake Sales, Sponsored Silence or Walks, Raffle, Seedling Sale or Bike Rides.
Friends of the Sanctuary like Frances at Friz Knits regularly knits or crochets items for sale in our Gift Shop as well as, selling knitted items and then purchasing quantities of food for the hedgehogs or an incubator for the Hedgehog Hospital.
Many platforms make fundraising for Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary easy, such as Facebook and Just Giving.
Leave a Legacy to Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary
By leaving a gift in your Will, you can support the work we do and directly help Wild Hedgehogs. British Wild Hedgehogs are on the red list to becoming endangered. Legacies come in all shapes and sizes, but every gift has the power to help save the hedgehogs and support the work we do.
Help the Hedgehogs Through Business Sponsorship
If you have a local business that would like to help a local charity through sponsorship, we would love to hear from you. We have a lot of ongoing operational costs just to keep the Charity functioning and sponsorship of these services would help a huge amount.
If your business is involved in construction and development of houses, we would be keen to talk about ways you could help the hedgehogs. We also have ongoing projects at the sanctuary and upkeep of the building which are used for the hedgehogs, if you might be able to help with material costs such as wood, roofing, or groundwork please get in touch with us.
You might also like to help us with hedgehog information leaflets that we hand out during awareness events and visits. If you have a business and would like to help us by paying for the printing of these leaflets that would be amazing. Your brand would of course also be printed with thanks.
